Summer time learning packages from the art room!

7/6/2017

Students get a break for the summer and so do you as a teacher but that does not mean they should just leave the classroom with nothing to do, nothing to jog their creativity and nothing to capture all the good ideas they will have over the summer whether it is from boredom or travel, or camp fun or whatever it is your students do in the summertime.
  1. First of all the project has to be stimulating.
  2. The  project should use materials the students have access to, so the project should be open ended.
  3. The students should be using their creativity muscles -  like athletics if a student does not practice being creative how can they maintain their creativity?
  4. Make it use technology and things they like so that they are wanting to do the activities... Go on and engage them.
  5. Give the students choice. If they are an avid artist then give them many ideas, if they are not give them the option to do what they feel they can.

Examples of summer learning packs -
- The 30 day drawing challenge

-  Artist bingo -  students should complete one row of activities

- Give the students a list of things to do

Summer learning packs can be really fun and are worth a try in any learning environment. Remember to make it accessible, engaging and fun! Have a lovely summer break everyone.

How do you incorporate pop culture into the classroom

So how do we incorporate pop culture into the classroom? As art teachers we have options.
you need to be creative:
Your students are into the flipping water bottle challenge -  create a colour mixing activity and have them flip colours together.
If your students like spinner toys -  make them?

There are a million options and people have already written about it.
Check out  - Abby Schukei ´s blog
https://www.theartofed.com/2017/06/02/3-ways-incorporate-pop-culture-art-room/.
She has great ideas that would inspire any of us to get printing, laminating and creating new things on a continuous basis to keep our students engaged.

One thing I do know is if you show interest in what the students are interested in at the time you can end up with great works of art that are owned by the student. Let them own their ideas, most of the time they are better than ours.
