ELEMENTARY VISUAL ARTS

This is a demonstration for the mum's of kindergarten. The parents at my school are predominantly Portuguese speaking. This was created as a reference, these scarves were made for our Christmas bazaar.

For the school's December bazaar each class needs to create something that will be sold. All profits are donated to a charity chosen by the IB CAS students. I thought that kindergarten could create scarves. We live in Brazil, so the December holiday season is hot although a lot of our families travel to colder climate.
My children Miles and Ella decided to help me experiment -  Ella is in kindergarten and Miles is in grade 2.

For years I have been in and out of the elementary art classrooms, either as a teacher or a visiting teacher:

Here are a few of the art projects that I have done in the younger years:

In Chiang Mai, my school had the opportunity to participate in "Behind the door" International Schools exhibition. Our school exhibited works from grade 2 to grade 7. It was a fabulous experience and recommended to anyone who has an opportunity to get the international schools together and make art together.

Architecture grade 2

In order to develop an understanding of the world we live in we need to understand the way buildings influence our lives, our personal and shared spaces, and our aesthetic experiences. Students are asked to fill out this form first in a constructivist manner. After the students have spent time together developing answers the whole class participates in completing this task.

Children need to be able to draw what they love:
A few examples of work done in the last few years.

When students love something you should let them explore their passion in as many forms as they can, but teach them the basics of drawing and adding colour.

Christmas bizarre is a fun time to do more crafty types of art with elementary school. These were made to sell at our school Christmas bazaar -  all the money went to charity.

We also made potato print wrapping paper. This year we will be tie dying scarfs and sarongs ( as we are in Brazil, sarongs are handy in the summer.

Art in the PYP should always relate to the concept of the UOI.
When working within the unit of Migration drawing onto maps was a fun activity that yielded high conceptual results: students in grade one just loved maps and had a better understanding of how they worked. This students drew all the places the flash could get to in an hour. He then had to understand that the Flash would learn how to swim.
